Wind turbines create electrical energy by harnessing the moving energy of the wind. The wind turns a wheel which creates mechanical energy in turn spinning a connecting generator and producing electrical energy. Most conventional wind turbines are on a horizontal axis meaning they rotate and look like pinwheels in the sky. Mike's Design rotates vertically like the amusement part ride the tea cups minus the overambitious person spinning the tea cup on their own.
The pinwheel approach is the convention, but would the Earthship founder and creator follow any conventional norms without questioning ... is this really the best way? What do you think? The horizontal axis conventional construction method has to be facing into the wind so a location with wind that changes direction can be hard for the horizontal wind turbine to cope with. Even when design changes are made there is still a high failure rate, or best case scenario no power generation.
A vertical axis wind turbine has several advantages. One being it does not need to be pointing into the wind to operate effectively so it can harness wind power even when it changes direction sporadically. One assumption of a disadvantage of a vertical axis wind turbine is that it takes more energy for the turbine to start spinning and has a slower rotational speed, both which could lead to other problems. These assumptions all depend on the design and should just be considered a design challenge by a progressive inventor. It takes one part common sense and one part humility to work with nature. This is a pretty big transition for us since most of us in the western world, where ironically ingenuity was founded, have been trained to dominate and overcome instead of to surrender and observe, as nature requires. Learning to honor and work with our natural elements may prove to be beneficial to us on many levels. Let's observe a short clip of Mike's Vertical Axis prototype called the Dynasphere. You can decide if this has a hard time starting up or a slow rotational speed for yourself.
You'd probably label that a fast rotational speed. Fast is relative to the speed the generator can handle. If the turbine spins too fast the brake would be engaged to keep the generator from burning up or wearing out too fast. Two DC generators will be mounted to the Dynasphere providing two sources of continuous 7.5 amps if the wind is continuously blowing. In lamems terms this will provide power available to the outlets in the house comparative to solar panels.
Also like an Earthship this design is functional as well as aesthetic. The petal art work on the turbine is created from reclaimed scrap metal from the landfill as well as using other recycled pieces also. Looking closely at the Dynasphere you can see another tire maybe the Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man logo for Earthship should be in a tire .... I see a pattern here. There are no plans to gets expensive patents for this design to engage in capitalistic wars later. The plan is simply to get the invention into the hands of the people to start harnessing clean free energy. The design is simple enough it can be serviced anywhere in the world.
The prototype isn't completely finished yet, but Mike already has Dynasphere interest in Sweden considering it is cloudy the majority of the time there so solar power isn't an option for them, however they of have the unlimited possibility of wind energy.
